Henry Wilden awarded Member of Star & Key medal

Mauritian Opera singer, Henry Wilden, has been awarded the medal of Member of Star and Key on the 48th year of the Independence of Mauritius.

From 1972 to 1983 Henry was the Leading Tenor with the Australian Opera appearing in at least 15 opera productions, including Les Contes d’Hoffmann, partnering Dame Joan Sutherland for the inaugural opening of the Sydney Opera House.

  Date of birth: 2nd April 1935, Beau Bassin, Mauritius.

  Profession   Opera singer (Lead Tenor)

 

  Career Summary

1957-1958 Leading tenor with French company in Algeria.

1964      Represented Mauritius in concert for the opening of the

               Centre Albert Camus in Tananarive.

               Sang lead tenor part in Bless the Bride with HMS Mauritius

               in Vacoas

1969      Appeared as lead tenor in Le Pays du Sourire , a production of Max

              Moutia , at the Port louis Theatre,

1971      Successful audition for lead tenor roles with Australian Opera in Sydney.

1972-1983 Leading tenor with Australian Opera appearing in at least

               15 opera productions, including Les Contes d’Hoffmann, partnering

               Dame Joan Sutherland for the inaugural opening of the Sydney Opera

             House.

             Partnered prestigious sopranos. Has collaborated with many renowned

             Conductors, including Sir Edward Downes, Sir Marc Elder, Sir John

            Pritchard, Richard Bonynge CBE, and many others.

            Has performed in Vancouver and New Zealand.

1983 – 1988  Freelance singer.

1987    Invited by the Mauritian Government to appear in gala concert

           for  The ‘Festival de la mer’.

1988   Early retirement due to heart problems.

2007   Invited by Opera Mauritius to present, at the MGI Theatre in Moka,

           an official DVD of the opera Lakme in which I sang the leading tenor

           role with Dame Joan Suthertland. Also presented the DVD of the Making

          of Lakme, to the students at the Francois Mitterand conservatorium in

          Quatre Bornes.

 

Took the opportunity to compile two CD’S with the best voices of Mauritian artists over three generations. The fund raised would be used for the renovation of the Plaza Theatre.
